JAN 11, 2014 – March Through Koreatown Marks National Human Trafficking Awareness Day

www.CastLA.orgLos Angeles, California – January 7, 2014 – Los Angeles-based organization Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking (CAST) is partnering with Catholic Sisters and other community partners to host “Walk 4 Freedom” to mark National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

The 2-mile route will wend through Koreatown, a neighborhood where known cases of human trafficking have surfaced.  About 100 people from all walks of life are expected to turn out for the walk, including students, families and business professionals.  Internationally-recognized survivor-advocate Ima Matul will lead a contingent of survivors of human trafficking who have become vocal human rights advocates.  Sister Kathleen Newell, who is 93 years old, will show that people of all ages care about social justice.

The United Nations estimates that 27 million people are living slavery around the world today, with Los Angeles being a top destination for human trafficking in the United States.  Tens of thousands of people in the U.S. are currently living in some type of modern-day slavery.

“Human trafficking is a serious and growing problem in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles.  This human rights violation often happens behind closed doors, hidden from the public.  Today, we are walking to shed light on this issue.  Traffickers often exert control over victims by tearing down their self-esteem, saying that nobody cares whether they live or die.

Walk 4 Freedom sends a very different message:  the people of Los Angeles do care. There is hope.  Trafficking victims can come forward, receive help, and live with dignity again.  The trafficking survivors who are walking with me today are living proof of this hope that we can put an end to modern-day slavery,” says Kay Buck, Executive Director and CEO of CAST.

Walk 4 Freedom takes place on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 9:00 a.m.  The route begins and ends in front of St. Basil’s Church (3611 Wilshire Boulevard) and will take approximately one hour.

About Catholic Sisters and Friends

Catholic Nuns have invited their networks, friends and partners to participate in this walk.  Partner groups include Southern California MALES  (Men As Learners and Elders) who are  dedicated to the Journey of Illumination (JOI), that is, the ongoing transformation of men through spirituality and wisdom of the ages. In that commitment to transformation, they promote the abolition of all forms of human exploitation, including trafficking and modern day slavery.

QLE-PR Client In The News: Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking (CAST) Named Finalist in Partnership for Freedom

Innovation Competition Seeks New Ideas to Support Human Trafficking Survivors in the United States

Los Angeles, California – Dec. 16, 2013 – Los Angeles-based organization, Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking (CAST) has been named a finalist in the Reimagine: Opportunity, a national competition seeking innovative ideas to improve the lives of survivors of modern-day slavery in the United States.

Reimagine: Opportunity is sponsored by the Partnership for Freedom, a public-private partnership led byHumanity United, the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women initiative and Steven Spielberg’s Righteous Persons Foundation.

CAST’s initiative, The Networked Survivor, is a plan for creating powerful professional and social networks resulting in career opportunities for survivors of human trafficking in some of Los Angeles’ largest industries: tourism, hospitality, entertainment, beauty and health.  The Networked Survivor is a training, social and professional networking system designed to transform the life trajectory of survivors and increase survivor access to quality economic opportunity.

Today, tens of thousands of people in the U.S. are currently living in some type of modern-day slavery, including commercial sexual exploitation, involuntary domestic servitude and bonded labor.  Although efforts to combat this crime have increased in recent years, care and recovery support for survivors remains inadequate. The Partnership for Freedom’s challenge is looking for creative, sustainable ways to address three critical issues faced by human trafficking survivors: sustainable housing, economic empowerment and social services.

“Survivors of human trafficking are some of the most entrepreneurial and hard-working people I know. However, because of a variety of complex factors, they are often held back from moving forward in their education and career goals.  The Networked Survivor is an economic empowerment model that will help survivors develop the robust networks necessary for job advancement and true self-sustainability,” says Kay Buck, CAST’s CEO and Executive Director.

CAST’s idea was selected from among more than 160 submissions representing 260 applying organizations from around the country. In January, CAST will join 12 other finalists at an Innovation Workshop in Washington, DC, where they will be coached by specialists in technology, social enterprise, communications and media.  In the spring, the winners will be announced, with prize grants totaling $1.8 million.

With survivors as key advisors, CAST has joined forces  with Hospitality Training Academy (the training arm of UNITE HERE Union in Los Angeles’ high-growth tourism and hospitality industry),  Paul Mitchell Schoolsand UEvolution to provide quality training and sustainable career opportunities that lead to economic empowerment.  CAST welcomes inquiries from other socially-minded businesses that want to help survivors find fulfilling work and reach their goals.

About CAST

For over 15 years, CAST has championed a comprehensive, survivor-centered approach to combatting human trafficking.  CAST provides trafficking survivors with a continuum of life-transforming services:  a 24-hour emergency response system; legal services; social services; and a survivor leadership program. Through this intensive work in the trenches, CAST holds a unique perspective that has catalyzed innovative partnerships.  With these strategic relationships in place, CAST is boldly stepping into its next era as an agent of shared leadership and collective impact with new players to unveil The Networked Survivor, a plan for creating powerful career paths and networks for survivors of human trafficking.

Fans and Friends Gather to Celebrate an Icon As Grandmaster Eric “LIONMAN” O’Neal Leads the Martial Arts Community in a Moving Tribute to Martial Arts Legend GrandMaster Jim “The Dragon” Kelly

(L-R: GrandMaster Eric “LIONMAN” O’Neal, Sabrena Kelly-Lewis; Photo by: David Kamatoy; Jim Kelly Design by Ryan Benjamin, DC Comics)

LOS ANGELES, CA  – July 30, 2013  — Grandmaster Eric “LIONMAN” O’Neal, a 7-Time USKA World Karate Champion and 2-time Gold Medalist, led an intimate gathering of family and friends in a moving tribute to a fellow legend – Grandmaster Jim “The Dragon” Kelly, who passed away last month from cancer. The special memorial tribute was open to the public and truly celebrated the life of a karate master and mentor, actor and beloved member of the martial arts community, featuring appearances by many of the community’s luminaries.

This past Saturday afternoon at the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center, joy mingled with tears as Kelly’s colleagues and only daughter, Sabrena Kelly-Lewis reminisced and remembered a great man.

“It was very heartwarming to be in the company of dedicated fans, people who worked with my Father, idolized and befriended him. It was very uplifting to hear so many people tell me how much my Father impacted them in a positive manner,” expressed Sabrena Kelly-Lewis (her first time speaking in public).  “I’d like to thank Grandmaster Eric O’Neal Sr., and all that was involved in my Father’s tribute, for making it such a memorable event.  My Father would have been pleased.  He was the first African-American martial artist to become a movie star.  He lived a life above reproach and he was one of the earliest role models for the young African-American males. Considering all that he accomplished, his legacy can not be tarnished!”

Moving remarks were also made by the community’s brightest including Bob Wall (Enter the Dragon), Fred ‘The Hammer’ Williamson (Three the Hard Way), Ernie Singleton (Former President of MCA Records), Herbert Jefferson, Jr. (Galactica 1980), Gloria Hendry (Black Belt Jones), Freda Payne (Chart-topping Singer/Actress), 5-time World Kickboxing Champion GrandMaster Robert ParhamArt Camacho, Eric Chen (Impact Stunts), Dr Frank DeGourville, and others.

“It’s an honor to celebrate a man who meant so much to so many,” said Grandmaster O’Neal.  “Jim was a true talent, and he shared that talent to inspire others – not just to excel at what they do, but to excel at who they are — as human beings.  He was my mentor — someone I looked up to growing up in the projects. He showed me, and so many others, that you can aspire to greatness and achieve greatness.”

Kelly was an avid competitor, winning the Middleweight title at the Long Beach International Karate Championships in 1971. From there, he caught the attention of Bruce Lee and John Saxon and brought his karate skills to films like Enter the Dragon and many others including Black Belt Jones, The Black Samurai, Three The Hard Way and The Tattoo Connection.  Kelly was also a professionally ranked tennis player and coach. In 2004, he starred with LeBron James in a Nike commercial.
